Raymond mill is the ideal equipment for processing clay powder. It is suitable for non-flammable and non-explosive materials with Mohs hardness ≤7 and moisture ≤6%, particularly well-suited for medium-hardness, easy-to-grind materials like clay. Using the centrifugal rolling + air classification principle, it can grind clay from a feed size of ≤30mm down to 80-400 mesh (up to 600 mesh for some), producing uniform fineness, concentrated particle size distribution, and no over-grinding.
Clay Raymond Mill | High Efficiency & Energy Saving, Uniform Fineness-The Grinding Equipment Designed for Bentonite,Kaolin,Ball Clay & Other Clay Minerals
Clay is a fundamental raw material in the ceramic, paper, rubber, paint, drilling mud, cat litter, geosynthetic clay liner, and other industries. Common clays include bentonite, kaolin, ball clay, and fire clay. These materials are typically characterized by high moisture, high viscosity, and easy clumping, presenting special requirements for grinding equipment.
Compared with traditional ball mills, the Raymond mill offers significant advantages: compact structure, small footprint, low power consumption, high one-pass powder yield, uniform product fineness, and dust-free operation. To address the high viscosity of clay, our Raymond mill can be equipped with an anti-blocking hopper, special shovels, and an air sealing system to effectively prevent material blockage and adhesion. The equipment features high-manganese alloy rollers/rings or optional ceramic wear parts to ensure long-term stable operation while meeting strict environmental standards at home and abroad.
Clay powder of different fineness is widely used in the following industries:
| Application Industry | Typical Material | Fineness | Value Proposition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drilling Muds | Bentonite | 200-325 mesh | Increases viscosity, shear force, and suspension capacity, maintains wellbore stability |
| Cat Litter | Bentonite | 100-200 mesh | High absorbency, rapid clumping, excellent odor control |
| Geosynthetic Clay Liners | Bentonite | 200-325 mesh | High swelling capacity, low permeability, used for landfill impermeability |
| Ceramics | Kaolin, ball clay | 250 mesh+ | Improves plasticity and whiteness, raw material for ceramic bodies and glazes |
| Paper Industry | Kaolin | 800-1250 mesh (coating grade) or 200-325 mesh (filler grade) | Improves whiteness, smoothness, and opacity of paper |
| Paints & Coatings | Kaolin, bentonite | 800 mesh+ | Improves leveling and suspension, enhances opacity |
| Rubber/Plastics | Kaolin | 400-800 mesh | As functional filler, improves strength and wear resistance |
| Foundry | Bentonite | 100-200 mesh | As molding sand binder, improves casting surface quality |
| Organoclay | Bentonite fine powder | 200-325 mesh | After organic modification, used in oil-based drilling fluids, paints, etc |
The working principle of the Clay Raymond Mill is based on centrifugal rolling and air classification, with optimization for the high viscosity of clay:
1. Feeding (Anti-Blocking Design)
Clay raw material is crushed by a crusher to ≤25mm, then lifted by a bucket elevator into a raw material silo. Due to clay‘s tendency to clump and adhere, the hopper and feeder feature anti-blocking design (such as vibrating hopper, Teflon-lined screw feeder). An electromagnetic vibrating feeder uniformly and quantitatively feeds the material into the Raymond mill grinding chamber.
2. Grinding (Anti-Adhesion Design)
When the main unit is working, the grinding rollers tightly press against the grinding ring under centrifugal force. The material is scooped up by a shovel blade and thrown between the rollers and the ring. For clay’s high viscosity, the shovel blades are made of special wear-resistant material with optimized angles to reduce material adhesion. The rolling and crushing action between rollers and ring pulverizes the clay into fine powder. Optional ceramic rollers/rings prevent iron contamination for high-whiteness products.
3. Classification
The ground powder rises with the airflow from the fan to the classifier. The classifier controls the final fineness by adjusting the speed of the classifying rotor. Powder that meets the fineness requirement passes through the classifier to the cyclone collector or dust collector; coarse powder is rejected and falls back into the grinding chamber for regrinding, forming a closed circuit.
4. Collection & Dust Removal
After preliminary collection by the cyclone collector, the dust-laden gas enters a pulse baghouse filter for further purification, achieving final dust emission below 20mg/Nm³. The collected finished powder is discharged through a discharge valve and conveyed by a screw conveyor to the finished product silo or packaging machine.
5. Clay-Specific Optimizations
Anti-Blocking Hopper: Prebridging and blockage of wet, sticky material.
Air Sealing System: Prevents fine powder from entering bearings, extending life.
Air Volume Adjustment: Adjusts airflow based on clay moisture to avoid wall sticking.
